If there’s something I love more than taking family photos, it’s taking portraits of extended families. Being offered the privilege of recording a tiny moment of family history that is likely to be shared down the line.

Sure, there are sometimes challenges with big groups. But don’t worry, I promise it’s nothing I haven’t seen before. Colours don’t coordinate, no problem. Rain is coming and we can’t change the date: we’ll find a covered spot. Regardless of the little hiccups that come with big parties, it’s always well worth the investment.

Some of my favourite pictures are the candid snaps. The fact is, babies cry, great-grandmas get drowsy and teens are often expressing themselves with a sullen façade. And the thing is…that’s ok! In fact, it’s wonderful.

Because that’s the cycle of life. Things are exactly as they should be.

I’m not saying smiles aren’t great. They’re my gold standard. But I also believe in the power of capturing something even more magical: the real, unvarnished moments of family interaction that make each group so unique.

I’ve been invited to step into clients’ lives when a revered elderly loved one is facing a life-limiting illness; when a family member suddenly faces long-term care; or when a long-awaited grandchild is welcomed via adoption.

The wonderful thing about families is they come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes my photos capture generations, other times they focus in on how a given family has changed configuration, expanding to welcome step-parents and siblings, and reforming in a new and different shape.

Regardless of how a family is made up, the view from behind my lens is perfect. Because each family I see is exactly as it should be.
